Born in Ekenäs, Finland 1964 | Lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.
The imagery in Susanne Gottberg’s paintings comprises quiet, tense moments and situations where something has just departed or will soon occur. In recent years, Gottberg has shifted from depicting nature and sceneries to interiors, examining different elements of furniture, studying fabrics and details of patterns. Gottberg challenges the viewer to experience emptiness and the expectations that come with it.
Susanne...

I am a bicycle woman and a landscape painter living in Espoo, next to Helsinki, and having a studio at Cable factory, Helsinki. I used to travel to discover inspiration but nowadays I feel like flying is bad for the planet and air travel is usually the largest component of the carbon footprint of frequent flyers. That makes me enjoy more and more of all the extreme seasons that Finnish nature has to offer: everything between the warmest summer, midnight sun and the arctic darkness, quietness and snow...
In my art, I represent human beings in relation to themselves, to each other and being human in general. I am interested in the connection between body and mind: I try to describe feelings and states of mind by picturing the positions of a body, paying less attention to the face. In my artworks, concrete elements of nature have a function as building materials. For the human bodies, I am especially inspired by beach pebbles and stones on a sea shore. For the hair my inspiration is a seaweed called...
